Our country is in the midst of political and moral crisis, facing real and heartbreaking tragedies that shatter, displace and destroy hundreds of thousands of lives every day, caused by our national inability or unwillingness to come together for real and critical action that would save lives, heal families, rebuild homes, save the earth, provide wisdom in times of global pandemic - and all of this? Sacrificed in the name of power, of domination, of pride and arrogance and mean-spirited politico-babble. As a Christ follower, how do we respond? What does it mean to pray that simple prayer, “Thy Kingdom Come?”
Read MoreTo breathe or not to breathe: is that the question? In this 21st century hour, I think it is. We’ve forgotten how to breathe, one breath at a time. So consumed with the hectic madness of these days- pandemic panic, contentious elections, earth-on-fire, racial tension, economic uncertainty, we hyperventilate through the days and nights, in a fog of anxiety and worry, barely registering each day’s unfolding. We can almost hear the world shouting - “Stop the world! I want to get off”! Is there a different way? Is there something more that leads to serenity?
Read MoreIn the midst of our daily mess - the disruptions, the heartaches, the struggles - and yes - even the triumphs, how do we keep sane? How do we tap into what’s going on deep inside? How do we show up each day, reporting for duty to “life”, and still find time to connect up with the Divine?
Read MoreWhat do you do first thing in the morning? What’s that routine you’ve settled into - either intentionally or by default? Are you one of those folks who heads directly for the bathroom, brushing teeth, sleepily staring into the mirror wondering how to face another day? Are you the one checking email or Twitter on your phone before your feet have even hit the floor? Or is that cup of coffee a requirement for you to actually open your eyes? What calls you out of bed- what is your “dawn’s first call”? The alarm? The gym? Work? Walking the dog? Reading the news? I suggest there is a different way, a quieter way, a simple way that changes the coming day and fills it with joy and laughter.
Read MoreLiving life “simply sacred” is matter of setting priorities, of choosing what is best, but what is also simple. This begins with an understanding of the heart; the reaching down into our very souls to come to grips with this one concept: there is only one thing that is needful. One Thing. How do we choose One Thing? How do we decide?
Read MoreNot only do we struggle with a “simple” life, we’ve lost the sense of the “sacred” in our post-modern world. Technology has robbed us of childlike wonder; everything can be explained away and brought down to bits and bytes in a universe measured by nanoseconds. Our societal drifting away from religion and ritual has distanced us from the sense of holiness and wonder in our daily lives. How do we return to Simple? How will we make room for the Sacred?
Read MoreThis won’t be a blog on how to make your life simpler, though that might bring up an interesting conversation now and again. This also won’t be a blog on how to be holy. But I do believe we can bring the sacred, the holy if you will, into our every day lives. The challenge I propose is bringing the sacred into our daily existence through simple, uncomplicated, and loving ways.
